PHUNKY FOODS FOR FAMILIES

East Ayrshire Council’s Leisure Development Services have been working to improve the cooking skills of MEND graduates and their families.

‘Phunky Foods for Families’ sessions have been taking place once a week for the last eight weeks. Building on the existing Community Cookwell programme delivered by the CHIP Team these sessions place emphasis on learning basic cooking skills and encourage the whole family to prepare, cook and enjoy a healthy balanced diet.

STRATEGIC APPROACH PAYING OFF FOR TOURISM BUSINESSES

In the midst of the worst recession in memory, tourism in East Ayrshire has continued to grow for the second successive year, following the development of the area’s Tourism Strategy.

SHOW AND TELL FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS ON NEW CURRICULUM

Teachers in East Ayrshire will be using a new toolkit to help explain changes to the school curriculum to parents.

The resource aims to give mums, dads and carers more information about how the new curriculum will affect their children and how they can get involved.

NETHERTHIRD RESURFACING

Works to improve the road surface at the new Community Centre in Netherthird will start next week.

The road resurfacing project will start from the junction of Rydreston Drive and Lamont Crescent to the new community facility. In addition to this resurfacing project there will also be repairs made to frost damaged roads at Carsgailoch Avenue, Holmburn Road and John Allan Drive while work will be undertaken to reinstate a section of footway on Craigens Road.

NEW FARM PRIMARY CELEBRATES THE BARD

Depute Provost John Campbell joined pupils at New Farm Primary School this week for a special Burns Supper that pupils have been hard at work preparing for the last two months.

The event was part of Primary 6/7’s Enterprise project which involved the class doing everything from raising money to hire the band to writing invitations, making posters and programmes, planning and costing the meal, making table plans, setting tables, decorating the hall and even serving the guests.

CURRICULUM OUTDOORS PLANS TO TAKE LEARNING OUTSIDE

Councillors recently approved education proposals that all children and young people in local schools should get the chance to learn outdoors – and not just in the classroom.

The new education plan will give strategic support to all schools and centres to become self-sufficient in the delivery of outdoor education, with the support of other education providers.

Research shows that taking part in outdoor activities develops children’s confidence and achievement and can add significantly to their learning experience.

SUPPORT CENTRE MOVES TO NEW PREMISES

Provost Stephanie Young joined other guests recently at an Open Day held to show people around the new premises of the Rape Counselling and Resource Centre in Kilmarnock.

Guests were able to find out more about the service which provides free and confidential counselling and support to female survivors of rape and child sexual abuse; mothers whose children have been abused, or anyone supporting a survivor, such as friends, partners, parents and families.

A CRACKING CHINESE NEW YEAR IN KILMARNOCK

Thirty local school children joined the Chinese community in Kilmarnock town centre last Sunday to bring in the Chinese New Year with a bang, by performing a stunning Dragon Dance.

Guests and onlookers welcomed in the Year of the Tiger in spectacular style, with Chinese entertainment, firecrackers– and Scottish pipers.

Following a formal opening by Provost Stephanie Young and Thomas Ho, Chairperson of KULOC, the Chinese Association, firecrackers were set off and a procession marched through the town.
