The A76 Corridor Partnership comprises Dumfries and Galloway and East Ayrshire Councils, together with their respective police forces and regional transport partnerships, SWestrans and SPT. The group has a common shared interest in securing a range of improvements to the A76 trunk road.

Further upgrading of the A76 route is needed to:

Improve overtaking opportunities

Improve the reliability of journey times

Reduce the number and severity of crashes

Reduce the environmental impact of traffic on communities

Promote tourism, social and economic growth

Improve strategic transport links to the Former Coalfield Regeneration Area.

An Action Plan leaflet has been prepared by the A76 Partnership and has been sent to the Scottish Minister seeking Scottish Government action on the A76 trunk road.

The Action Plan leaflet reviews the history of the route; considers traffic delays and other operational issues; road safety; and future land use and economic development policies. The leaflet also sets out a Five Point Action Plan to improve safety and provide more reliable connections between our communities, our business opportunities, and their markets.

The key recommendations of the Five Point Action Plan are:

Completion of remaining improvement schemes identified in the 1996 route action plan at Brackenhill, Polquhirter, Gateside and Cample.

Upgrading of substandard carriageway at Crosshands, Skerrington, Drumlanrig Gorge and Ellisland.

Provision of a bypass at Mauchline.

Improvement of the Bellfield Interchange.

Improvement of road safety on the route.

The Partnership is keen to hear the views and opinions of members of the public about the five action points. You can read more about the plan, download the leaflet produced and register your comments by clicking here to visit the A76 Corridor Partnership page on East Ayrshire Council’s Website.

Resurfacing works are due to commence on the section of the A71 between Moorfield Roundabout and Corsehill Roundabout.

The repairs are required after the section of road suffered badly as a result of the previous severe winter.

During the spring and early summer the speed on this section of road was reduced to 50 mph for safety reasons until the repairs could be organised and financed.

The works are due to commence on Monday 9 August 2010 and will last no longer that 14 days. The resurfacing is being carried out by Colas Ltd in partnership with East Ayrshire Council using the Repave Process whereby less of the existing carriageway is removed than by conventional means.

The remaining carriageway is then heated and a new hot rolled asphalt is bonded to the existing heated material forming a completely new running surface.

To allow this process to be carried out safely, the westbound traffic will be diverted onto the eastbound carriageway where a contraflow will be in operation for the duration of the works.

East Ayrshire Council apologise in advance for any delays which the public may experience, but stress that every effort will be made to have the works completed and have the carriageway re-opened as soon as possible.

Transport Scotland and Amey Highways will be delivering a £1.6 million improvement scheme to the A76 at Mauchline.

This significant investment will:

upgrade almost one mile of the A76.

renew the road surface.

improve drainage.

provide landscape renewal.

The work will start on-site on 12th July to coincide with the school summer holidays and, weather permitting, last a total of 10 weeks. A finish date of 27th September is anticipated.

A76 Works at Mauchline

The works, designed and managed by Amey, will be delivered in three phases and make use of traffic restrictions. Phase one is from the south end of the village to the Cross and is programmed for 20 days. Phase 2 is from the Cross to the north end of the village and is programmed for 50 days. The Cross itself (Phase 3) will be resurfaced during a single weekend, from the Friday night until the Monday morning.

The A76 Trunk Road will be closed for the duration of the works. Access will be provided to businesses and residents in Mauchline. Major delays are expected. Through traffic on the A76 will be diverted via the A70 at Cumnock to Ayr then north on the A77 to Kilmarnock and vice versa. Local traffic will be diverted via the B743 / B713 and A719 at various times.

East Ayrshire Council will close off the Mauchline ‘Hill-top Road’ and Sorn Old Bridge to prevent damage to these roads from diverted traffic. In addition the 20mph zone within Sorn will be extended in either direction to cover the section from the New Bridge to the Kirk.

East Ayrshire Council will take advantage of the A76 closure of the Cross during Phase 3 to carry out resurfacing works on Loudoun Street . This will minimise disruption to the public once trunk route works are completed.

Both before and during the works a site liason officer will be available on site. Paul Farrell can be contacted on 07817 999444.
