Initial site visits have taken place in anticipation of a brand new public art installation to be situated in Dean Castle Country Park.

East Ayrshire Council’s Cultural and Countryside Services recently selected Artist John Crosby to work with 13 pupils form St Joseph’s Academy, to create the circular buff coloured sandstone seat with the slogan ‘Remember the dead, fight for the living’. This is the slogan of the International Workers Memorial Day (IWMD) Organisation, which the seat will commemorate.

Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of East Ayrshire Council said: “This is a fantastic project which encourages our young people to look at their surroundings and create public art which will encourage visitors to think about International Workers Memorial Day and will pay tribute to the importance of trade unions and the rights of the worker. The project will also link in to pupils’ studies of the history of British trade unions, worker’s rights and issues of globalization.”

The circular design format of the seat embraces the idea of unity. 13 stone blocks constituting the circle will be carved on the outer vertical surface with quotes and images developed by the young people from St Joseph’s. The concept of the artwork is to add weight to and create greater awareness of the IWMD slogan by investigating the theme of health and safety at work, the outcome of which will be the production of designs combining written contributions and graphic images which are to be immortalised in carved stone.

The project will address topics including attitudes to health and safety – asking why accidents are seen as amusing; the history of safe working practices in the UK and abroad; reasons for the rise and fall of industries that once thrived in Kilmarnock and surrounding area, and the link to globalization for their demise. It will also illustrate working conditions in various countries in the developing world, with emphasis on the means of production of every-day consumer items such as trainers, branded clothing and mobile phones of which we are the beneficiaries.

Councillor Willie Coffey said: “The young people at St Joseph’s have really taken this project to heart. They’ve combined their interest in Modern Studies with Art and have come up with some wonderful work. I’m sure the people visiting the memorial will be impressed. Well done.”

At the commemoration/inauguration ceremony on April 28 2012, a maple tree, the national tree of Canada, where the IWMD organisation was founded, will be planted in the centre of the grass within the Ring Seat.

Notes to Editor

The origins of International Workers Memorial Day
“International Workers’ Memorial Day (IWMD) is intended to remember all those killed at or by work, and to strengthen our resolve to reduce risks and protect people from injury in the workplace.

International Workers’ Memorial Day originated in Canada, founded by CUPE, The Canadian Union of Public Employees. 28 April was chosen for IWMD as this is the anniversary of the Occupational Health and Safety Act in the USA and also commemorates the day that 28 people were killed in a construction incident in Connecticut. Since 1989 trade unions in the USA, UK, Asia, Europe and Africa have organised events on and around 28 April. IWMD was adopted by the Scottish TUC in 1993, followed by the TUC in 1999.”

Installation

The seat will be installed by professional masons on a circular steel reinforced concrete foundation measuring 600mm wide x 150mm thick. The strength of the foundation will prevent future disturbance of the seat by the roots of the tree planted in the centre.

Since Dean Castle Country Park opened 30 years ago it has become one of Scotland’s most popular country parks.

The number of visitors to the park has increased at an incredible rate over the last year. In 2010, over 550,000 visits were recorded, placing the park as the fifth most visited in Scotland. This year’s figures are set to exceed 900,000 visits.

The rise in visitor numbers is a welcome boost for the local economy and to address the park’s growing popularity and secure its reputation as the area’s top visitor attraction, East Ayrshire Council has prepared a Management and Development Plan, which outlines a range of actions and improvements as the way forward for the park between now and 2016.

Following approval of the Management and Development Plan at Cabinet this week, Councillor Douglas Reid, Leader of the Council said: “Dean Castle Country Park is a local treasure which attracts visitors from all over Scotland and beyond. The time is right for us to look at the way the park is managed and to adopt a more innovative and creative approach to the development and promotion of this facility to ensure we continue to attract a healthy flow of visitors in the future.”

Following an extensive consultation process, the finalised Plan proposes three distinct management units each focusing on a different aspect of the Park: Historic Management; Urban Farm Management and Countryside Management.

Councillor Reid added: “We will manage the landscape around the castle in a more historically sympathetic fashion; we will develop an urban farm to help develop a breeding programme which will create a more cost effective and vibrant animal area and focus on bringing the extensive woodland back under positive management. We will also extend our core path network to include interpretive trails and links from the park to neighbouring attractions. We also plan to conduct an audit of existing buildings within the park to assess their suitability for current use, to ensure they are fit for purpose.”

Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration said: “Many people genuinely love spending time in this beautiful green space. The Management and Development Plan will enhance everything Dean Park has to offer and I am confident that by next year we will attract 1 million visitors. This is a fantastic achievement considering in 2009 we had fewer than 300,000 visitors. Kilmarnock has many assets we should be proud of and these figures prove that many people realise that the town and its parks are well worth visiting.’’

Visitors to the park have been enjoying the new duck feeding platform at the main pond which allows people to get even closer to the ducks and geese. Earlier this year volunteers from throughout Europe helped to build the platform which is part of a larger project to create a lagoon system of ponds accessible by a network of boardwalks. This project improves the landscape for wildlife and gives visitors access to an area of the park never explored before. A second group of volunteers, again from Europe, then constructed a raised pond and built a wheelchair accessible boardwalk.

This month a very enthusiastic group of teenagers from Singapore volunteered at the park. They were visiting Scotland as part of a Cultural Immersion Programme in partnership with Stewarton Academy and part of the trip saw the young people working for four days on a community project. In all weather, the 16 year olds worked incredibly hard on the lagoon project and thanks to their huge effort the raised pond is now complete and the boardwalk is ready to be opened to the public.

Councillor Kathy Morrice and Councillor John MacKay, Spokespersons for Improving Community Health and Wellbeing said: “These very successful projects have shown us how important volunteering is to the development of the Country Park and how much can be achieved with a bit of enthusiasm. With this in mind the Countryside Rangers are establishing the Dean Castle Conservation Volunteers. The group will meet once a month and work on important changes and improvements. This is a wonderful way of making your mark on the country park.”

Councillor Hugh Ross, Spokesperson for Promoting Lifelong Learning said: “It was really heartening to see the young people working so hard in the park. They were a great bunch of students who, despite the very wet weather, displayed exceptional commitment to the project. I hope that our young people will become involved with the Dean Park Conservation Volunteers and experience the benefit of working hard for their community.”

The first Dean Castle Conservation Volunteers session will take place on Sunday 5 February on World Wetland Day. If you would like further information please contact the Rangers on 01563 554734/ info@deancastle.com

Your dog doesn’t know better but you should – that is the message coming loud and clear from the Countryside Rangers at Dean Castle Country Park who are urging dog owners to know their rights and responsibilities.

Dog fouling continues to be a problem within the park. Under the Dog Fouling (Scotland) Act 2003 dog owners have a legal duty to clean up after their dog and can face a hefty fine if they don’t. Dog fouling is extremely unpleasant for visitors walking the park’s beautiful paths and it can also spread disease. Owners are being asked to – bag it, tie it and bin it and help keep the park free of dog mess.

Dog walkers, under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, have the right to use most land for recreation as long as they are acting responsibly. This means keeping their dog on a short lead or under close control. Dogs allowed to roam freely can cause ground-nesting and other birds to leave the nest, resulting in loss of clutches and broods. Ground-nesting species are also particularly vulnerable to attack by dogs.

Dogs can also cause distress or loss to livestock and with the animal breeding programme in place at the country park, the Rangers are keen to avoid pregnant livestock becoming distressed. Dog walkers are therefore asked to keep their dog on a lead at the Pets Corner area and surrounding paddocks.

For more information about the Scottish Outdoor Access Code contact the country park on 01563 554734 or speak to a member of staff.

During one of Scott’s recent regular health checks we were advised that Scott needs to go on a strict health regime that includes a change to his diet and some more vigorous exercise. If a horse is overweight it increases its likelihood of various illnesses particularly metabolic syndrome, diabetes and resistance to insulin. Metabolic Syndrome is a veterinary term used to describe horses showing signs of obesity or recurrent laminitis.

Native horses such as the Clydesdale Horse are more susceptible to metabolic syndrome as they have evolved a highly efficient metabolic system to survive in harsh conditions and endure long periods with sparse amounts of grass. This metabolic system allows them to store fat during the summer and spring which they could draw on during the winter months when food isn’t as available. However, Scott and many horses like him no longer need this system as they have access to far more calories than they are designed to cope with.

The key to treating and managing this is weight loss and exercise. Over the next few months, we will be introducing a healthy lifestyle programme for Scott and we would appreciate your help and support with this. Whilst we are grateful to everyone who regularly visits the Country Park to see Scott and the other animals, we would appreciate it if you no longer brought him any treats. Scott loves being one of our main attractions and the attention which comes with that and we are very keen for that to continue.

All of the animals at the Country Park are fed on the recommended nutritional diet for their breed. If you would like to feed the animals, please come into the visitor centre where you will be able to buy the correct food. This will help us monitor their intake and ensure that they live happy and healthy lives.

Running throughout the summer holidays Barnardo’s Scotland WEE6 Project is providing fun and exciting activities to young people aged 11 – 18 years living in the North West Area of Kilmarnock. The activities encourage young people to learn new skills, build confidence and develop skills which will help them in education, training or employment.

Councillor Kathy Morrice, Spokesperson for Improving Community Health and Wellbeing joined the young people for Den Building at Dean Castle Country Park. She said: “I was delighted to join our partners from within the Barnardo’s Scotland team at Dean Park and work with the young people. The WEE6 Project summer programme has been extremely well attended during the summer months and our young people have had the opportunity to learn new skills but importantly have embraced new experiences which has had a positive effect on their overall confidence.”

Mary Glasgow, assistant director for Barnardo’s Scotland services in Ayrshire, said: “The WEE6 Project has been a great success. It’s enabled young people in the area to learn new skills and meet other young people in their local community. We hope they will continue to be involved in similar activities and maintain the friendships long after the summer months have gone.”

East Ayrshire Council’s Leisure Services has worked closely with all local agencies providing activities to young people this summer– namely the Council’s Active Schools team, Kilmarnock Football Club, Northwest Youth Project, Mission Rescue, Job Centre Plus and Barnardo’s Scotland – providing support and funding to worthy projects. The team also produced a bE Active guide which includes all the activities on offer within the North West Area.

The deer herd at the Park is a welcome addition to the Urban Farm which includes highland cattle, pygmy goats, kune kune pigs and much more.

There was great excitement this week when it was discovered that two of the does had given birth to fawns. The young deer were born two weeks ago and were hidden by their mothers in the undergrowth within the deer park. However, they are now venturing out and enjoying the attention from visitors to the Country Park.

Why not come along to the Country Park and see our baby deer, learn a bit about them and perhaps even take the opportunity to feed them.

The weekend’s warm weather brought visitors aplenty to Dean Castle Country Park with families enjoying everything the park has to offer.

On Sunday morning employees from Dean Castle Country Park carried out their daily litter patrol of the park and were dismayed by the amount of litter left in the park, collecting ten bin bags of rubbish. Many of our visitors did act responsibly bagging their rubbish and using the bins provided or taking their rubbish home but a thoughtless minority has shown little respect for the park or other visitors.

Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration said: “Regrettably, employees from the park collected a full bag of broken glass from the car park area and inside the new fallow deer enclosure where beer bottles had been smashed and thrown over the fence. Broken glass can cause serious injury to wild and domestic animals and can potentially start fires in this sunny weather.

“Dean Park is a wonderful resource – please show it the respect it deserves and clean up litter after you.”

The Scottish Outdoor Access Code encourages us to care for the environment by:
• taking litter home
• treating places with care, leaving them as we find them
• don’t recklessly disturb or intentionally damage wildlife of historic places

Please put your litter in bins provided and if they are full, just make sure it is bagged beside the bin and we will be happy to lift it for you.

Visit us at www.deancastle.com

She had been gifted land within the former Dean Castle Estate by her husband, Lord Howard de Walden and her fascination with exotic trees lead to her developing specialised arboretums. In its hay day the Pinetum consisted of over 150 specimens of conifer trees from around the world.

John Griffiths, Head of Leisure Services said: “I was delighted to celebrate the restoration and development of this important historical landscape feature. The vast majority of the original trees were destroyed in the 1960’s when a large portion of the estate was planted with a commercial crop of trees which were never harvested. In 2010, recognising the importance of the pinetum, the countryside services team engaged the support of the local community to sponsor new trees which were planted late last year.

“This is a fascinating woodland garden and I am sure it will become a real attraction drawing even more visitors to the gem that is Dean Castle Country Park.”

Know the Code and control your dog – is the important message from Dean Castle Country Park’s Rangers who are concerned that some dog owners are not acting responsibly.

Dog owners have responsibilities under the Scottish Outdoor Access Code and ignoring their duties can cause disruption to wildlife, livestock and other visitors. They have the right to use most land for recreation as long as they are acting responsibly which means keeping their dog on a short lead, 2metres or less, or under close control.

There are a few points from the Code which are worth remembering in particular when visiting the country park:

• Dogs allowed to roam freely can cause ground-nesting and other birds to leave the nest, resulting in loss of clutches and broods. Ground-nesting species are also particularly vulnerable to attack by dogs.

• Dogs can easily cause distress or loss to stock and the general law allows for the destruction of dogs worrying livestock. Dogs and cattle in particular do not mix. With a new animal breeding programme in place at the country park, distressing pregnant livestock is something we are keen to avoid. Dog walkers are urged to keep their dog on a lead around the Pets Corner area and surrounding paddocks. There has been a recent incident where a dog, off the lead, attacked one of the park’s young hand reared chicks which sadly then had to be destroyed.

• Dogs not under control can also cause alarm or harm to visitors. Please remember that some visitors including children may be nervous or scared of dogs.

• Legal action can be taken against dog owners who do not act in a responsible way. For example in March 2009 a dog walker pleaded guilty to an offence relating to disturbance of fauna within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in England and was fined £250 and ordered to pay £250 costs for recklessly disturbing birds after letting his dogs off the lead within the nature reserve where they caused distress to nesting birds. He was prosecuted under section 28P (6A) of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.

• The Dog Fouling (Scotland) Act 2003 makes it an offence for the person in charge of a dog not to clear up after it if it defecates in any public open place. Intentionally or recklessly disturbing wildlife can be a criminal offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, the Conservation Regulations 1994 and the Nature Conservation (Scotland) Act 2004.

Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration said: “Dean Castle Country Park is a wonderful place for all ages – from the youngest to the oldest residents there is something to enjoy. Dogs that are not being controlled properly can negatively affect animals and other visitors so please know the code and control your dog.”

Don’t forget to visit www.deancastle.com or pick up a leaflet to find out what’s new at Dean Castle Country Park for 2011.

On Sunday 10 October, Dean Castle Country Park is hosting its very first Tree-Athlon to celebrate the end of National Conifer Week, Saturday 2 October – Sunday 10 October.

The Tree-Athlon is a unique event which brings together runners, walkers, children and families encouraging them to plant trees while raising awareness of the importance and benefits of urban trees.

In the spirit of a traditional triathlon, the Tree-Athlon is a three-part event: a 5-km run or walk around the stunning grounds of the country park, the chance to make a tree wish and share it with the world, and the opportunity to leave your tree legacy by planting a tree sapling with the ranger service.

Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration said: “Trees have countless benefits to our towns, cities and the wider environment, including providing a habitat and food for animals, insects and birds, providing health benefits by filtering out harmful pollutants from vehicle emissions, landscape and environmental screening for local communities and not to mention that trees are beautiful to look at!”

If you are interested in taking part in this event and contributing to the biodiversity of your local park then please register with Kate Dickens on 01563 554741 or email Kate.Dickens@east-ayrshire.gov.uk

There is a £3 charge for this event.

National Conifer Week starts on Saturday 2 October and to coincide with this event the Council’s Countryside Services will be hosting a special tree planting day which will celebrate the first phase of the Pinetum Restoration Project at Dean Park.

This is an historic event which you can participate in by sponsoring your own tree and planting it within the Pinetum. You can either sponsor an existing mature specimen tree or choose a new tree from a list which can be viewed in the Visitor Centre. The cost of sponsoring a tree is £20 which will include an engraved plaque detailing the name of the sponsor, the name of the tree and an interesting fact about it.

The original Pinetum was created between 1936 and 1938. It contained a collection of over one hundred individual specimen trees from all over the world and each tree had something rare and unusual it. 21 of the original conifer trees still exist within the Pinetum and Countryside Services are in the process of sourcing another 32 from the original planting list.

Councillor Jim Buchanan, Spokesperson for Delivering Community Regeneration said: “This project is just one of the many new and exciting projects planned for Dean Castle Country Park which will not only enhance the existing surroundings but will also help to restore some of the original designed landscape.

“If you would like to take part in this event, which will take place on Saturday 2 October between 1pm and 3pm, please call in at the visitor centre where staff will be happy to help you with further information.”

You can also contact the Countryside Ranger Service by email on rangers@east-ayrshire.gov.uk. or by telephone on 01563 554734 between 11am and 4pm.

There may not be much singing, but there’s certainly plenty of hard work going on at Dean Castle Country Park just now as the Council’s Countryside Services Section work with Xchange Scotland to develop an international volunteer project in the park.

Xchange Scotland is a voluntary organisation developed by Scottish volunteers and others committed to making positive changes in society. For the past six years, the members have been deeply involved in international volunteering with numerous local partners all around the world. Their aim is to open these exciting opportunities up to as many individuals and organisations in Scotland as possible, to bring people to Scotland for international volunteer projects and enable young Scots to volunteer abroad.

A group of 12 international volunteers and two leaders are working with Countryside Rangers at Dean Castle Country Park from 16 to 30 August on a project to develop a series of lagoons within the park. Once complete, the lagoons project will open up a previously inaccessible area of the park to the public and will have information boards, storytelling areas and a viewing platform. The creation of lagoons will also encourage a richer diversity of wildlife to the park.

This is the second year that Countryside Services have worked with Xchange Scotland. Last year’s volunteers helped to carry out path improvements on Cairn Table, one of the highest hills in Ayrshire.

Depute Provost John Campbell went along to see the volunteers in action and said: “For two weeks, the volunteers will be working in all weathers to help construct the lagoons. They are all working incredibly hard and their efforts will make a huge difference to the park. Many new friendships are being forged and I’m sure Countryside Services would be delighted to welcome them back for another year in 2011!”

If you are interested in volunteering abroad and would like more information about Xchange Scotland, contact Countryside Services on 01563 522702 or e-mail info@deancastle.com.

Provost Stephanie Young, who presented the orchestra with a gift on behalf of East Ayrshire, said: “I was delighted to meet our friends from Joué-lès-Tours and thoroughly enjoyed their wonderful music. The rain stayed away just long enough for the musicians to set up in the courtyard of the castle and play a selection of tunes which had the crowd dancing and clapping along despite the dreary weather.”

Joué-les-Tours is a town with a population of 40,000 situated in the Touraine region of north central France, near the River Loire. It is the second largest town in the region.

Work has started on the restoration of a historical pinetum at Dean Castle Country Park.

The pinetum, which was planted in the early part of the twentieth century, included a large collection of over 130 rare and unusual conifers from across the world. In order to reintroduce this beautiful feature to the park it is essential that the invasive Rhododendron ponticum must first be completely removed from the site.

Although Rhododendron ponticum is an attractive ornamental species, it is an extremely aggressive and invasive non native species which has been shown to reduce the numbers of earthworms, birds and plants and the regenerative capacity of a site, leading to a reduction in the biodiversity of the area.

Once the clearing of this historical site is complete, it will be planted with a mixture of conifers and broadleaved specimens which will improve biodiversity, protect the soil from erosion, encourage the growth of more ground covering plants and help in the conservation of endangered species. This is the first stage of a larger project to create an arboretum in keeping with the designed landscape of the Dean Estate.

If anyone has any information on the pinetum at Dean Castle Country Park or would like to be involved in the redevelopment of this historical site please contact Linzi Barr, Countryside Ranger on 01563 554738 or email Lindsay.Barr2@east-ayrshire.gov.uk

Join the Countryside Rangers for some Bat Magic on an evening walk around Dean Castle Country Park on Saturday 24 April, to discover more about our favourite nocturnal mammals.

Find out which bat is so small it can fit inside a matchbox and which bat can hear a ladybird walking on a leaf! Take a walk around the park with the Rangers and the Ayrshire Country Moth recorder and hope to find bats with long ears, red arms – and those that can eat 3,000 insects in a night. Bat seekers should meet in the main car park at 8.30pm.

Anyone interested in local history is welcome to join local historian Bob McWilliams on Sunday 25 April for a guided Heritage Walk around the north leg of the Kilmarnock Town Trail. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about Kilmarnock’s rich and varied heritage. For example, did you know that the Dick Institute was used as a military hospital during World War 1? Take part and discover more fascinating facts about Kilmarnock, both past and present

Numbers are limited on this walk and booking is recommended. Book online at www.deancastle.com, email info@deancastle.com or telephone 01563 522702. This walk leaves from the Laigh West High Kirk at 2pm and lasts approximately 2 hours.

Kids in New Cumnock enjoyed fabulous Kids Club Fun Day on Saturday 6 February, thanks to the outstanding dancing skills of club mates Abbie Grozier and Jenny Houston.

Along with Kids Club Assistant Roxanne McCutcheon, the girls did their club proud as they battled it out on the dance floor at the Kids Club Network Christmas party back in December.

At the party, run by Leisure Development’s Recreation Partnership Service, the girls participated in a Dance Mat Challenge along with dancers from eight other East Ayrshire Kids Clubs before securing the top prize of a Fun Day for their own club, having been awarded the highest score of the competition.

In the run up to the Christmas party, dance competitions were held to find the best dancers in the three categories: Primary 1-3, Primary 4-7 and a leaders’ category. At the party, the best dancers from each club took to the floor in a bid to win the Fun Day for their club.

Councillor Kathy Morrice, Spokesperson for Community Wellbeing said: “This is a fantastic achievement for these young girls and is an excellent example of how initiatives like our Kids Clubs can directly benefit the lives of our young people and our communities.”

The New Cumnock Fun Day was held in New Cumnock Games Hall and included Dance Mats and Zig Zag Wall from the Drongan Health Initiative and a bouncy castle.

If you would any further information about the New Cumnock Kids Clubs or any other Kids Club in East Ayrshire please contact the Health & Activity Motivators on 01563 578224 or 576858.
