PUPIL DECANT ARRANGEMENTS – Gargieston Primary School

Pupils at Gargieston Primary School will be decanted to four other school locations on Monday 23 August, following the unexpected advice of building contractors and engineers to vacate the site, after initial survey work revealed a series of shallow mine workings in the vicinity of the proposed new school.

CROSSROADS PRIMARY SCHOOL

East Ayrshire Council has now received a letter from the Scottish Government indicating their decision on the future of Crossroads Primary School. This follows the decision by the Cabinet of East Ayrshire Council to close the school following last year’s discovery of structural problems at Crossroads Primary School which were making the building unsafe. Children have been educated at the campus of Bellfield Primary School over the past year until the future of the school has been resolved.

PICTURE THE CHANGE – SCOTTISH YOUTH PARLIAMENT CONSULTATION

The Annual General Meeting of the Scottish Youth Parliament was held in Livingstone recently and East Ayrshire’s members of the SYP – Mark Rodger, Shannon Nani and Lesley Baird – made sure they were on hand to convey the views of our local young people.

VERY GOOD REPORT FOR EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY SERVICE

East Ayrshire Council’s Educational Psychology Service (EPS) has received a very good report from Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Education (HMIE) following a recent evaluation of the service. The service evaluated very highly, and is one of the top performing services in Scotland.

The EPS was evaluated externally to determine the impact it has on improving outcomes for children, young people and families across East Ayrshire.

FITNESS IS FUN AT SCHOOL HEALTH FAIR

Keeping healthy and getting active were the themes for a recent busy day at Loudoun Academy.

Second year pupils had a full timetable of activities in a fun-packed ‘Health Fair’ day, both inside and outside school.

On offer were dance classes run by Y-Dance, boxing, softball, Double Dutch skipping, as well as football, badminton and the more usual school sports.

Two young East Ayrshire teams celebrated sporting success recently in separate events.

The East Ayrshire Under-15 football team beat Glasgow 2-0 at Lesser Hampden in an exciting finale to take the Scottish Schools Under-15 National Trophy. Both goals were scored by Adam Fraser, 15, of James Hamilton Academy, Kilmarnock.

KILMARNOCK SCHOOL HOSTS CHINESE VISIT

Grange Academy played host to an important visitor from China last week in a move to strengthen the school’s cultural links with the country.

Vice Principal Honglin Zhang from Xinhua High School in Tianjin, China’s third-largest city, visited Grange Academy and took a tour of the impressive new-build school, before meeting pupils and staff.

SALMON IN THE CLASSROOM

Taking a new angle on education, East Ayrshire pupils are learning by looking at live salmon in the classroom.

In a project run by Ayrshire Rivers Trust, children at Loanhead, Kilmaurs, Nether Robertland and Crossroads Primary Schools have been finding out not only about fish, but also river life.

For the Salmon in the Classroom project, Trust volunteers go into schools for three sessions, beginning with a lesson on local rivers, including threats to wildlife such as pollution and over-fishing. They ..read more Read more
